MAGISTRATES' COURT.
STATISTICS FOR QUARTER. INCREASE IN CRIMINAL CASES. The most noticeable feature of the Magistrates' Court statistics at Auckland for the first quarter of the present year is the rapid increase in the number of criminal cases dealt with, the figures representing an increase of almost 25 per cent, as compared with those for 1926. There is also an increase in the proportion of female to male prisoners tjfcarged. E'or the first quarter of this year there were 2466 cases against niales, and 188 against females, making a total of 2654, compared with 1999 against males, 122 against females, or a total of 2121 for the first quarter of last year, and against males, and 168 against females, or a total of 2447 for the final quarter*?)f 1926. The figures show a small increase in civil business in most respects. For the quarter just ended, 3405 plaints were filed, the total amount sued for being £69,856, compared witn 3294 plaints and £69,069 sued for in the first quarter of 1926, and 3467 plaints and £67,142 sued for in the final quarter of last year. The number of judgment summonses issued during the past three months was 666, year. In the first quarter of this year the number of defended cases tried was 141, compared with 144 for the same period of last year. In cases tried during the first quarter of this year the total amount claimed was £55,004, and the amount recovered £35,289, compared with £53,323 claimed and £33,013 recovered during the first quarter, and £62,070 claimed and £37,209 recovered in the last quarter of last year.
