STOCKS AND SHARES.
AUCKLAND STOdK EXCHANGE. ACTIVITY IN BANK OF N.S.W. Sale of Bank of New South Wales shares at the record figure of £SO "was the feature of the business on the Auckland sharemarket yesterday. The advance of yesterday was in itself not a sensational one for such high-priced stock, but was in continuation of a series of firming movements which have characterised transactions in the shares since late in last year. These are fconsidered to be due to the fact that the bank will issue one share at par, £2O, to shareholders for every 11 shares held. The issue is due at the end of April and the more recent price movements are taken as evidence of the desire of a number of New Zealand shareholders to, make themselves qualified for receiving the new shares. From August of last year up to the end of December, the shares sold at prices ranging around £45. When the sharemarket reopened after the holidays the price advanced to £47 and early in February a further rise to £49 10s was recorded. After dropping back to £49 2s 6d at the beginning of March, the market has had a rising tendency until . yesterday, when sales were made at £49 17s 6d and £SO. Closing quotations yesterday were £SO ss, buyers £49 15s. The market yesterday was also interesting in the further respect that, in Government securities, Soldiers' Inscribed, 1933, per cent., sold at £lOl ss, the figure at which the stock changed hands at the end of. last year and the beginning of 1927. Further parcels were available at the same figure, buyers £lOl. In miscellaneous Colonial Sugars were quoted at £59 without result, the quotation being 10s in advance of the price paid for the shares in the middle of February and £4 above that paid when the Exchange was reopened in January. Taranaki Oils were steady at 12s and lis. There was sale in Tonson Garlicks at 15s and 14s 9d. The following sales took place Soldiers' Inscribed, 1933, per cent, £lOl ss; Bank of New South Wales, £49 17s 6d, £SO; Auckland Gas, 23s Id; Tonson Garlick, 15s, 14s 9d-. Kawarau, 3s, lid; Mount Lyell, 28s Bd.
