TAURANGA AFFAIRS.
COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING. [BY TELEGRAPH, —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA, Saturday. The Tauranga County Council met yesterday. A motion to transfer the county offices from Tauranga to Te Puke was proposed by Mr. C. Lally and seconded by Mr. C. Bailey. An amendment was moved by Mr. S. H. MacDougall and seconded by Mr. R. Francis that the motion be deferred until the next meeting. The amendment was carried by four votes to three. The council decided to renew its protest against the proposal of the Public Works Department to alter the classifies tion of roads as made by the council. Mr. F. S._ Dyson, district engineer of the Public Works Department, advised that the Main Highways Board had decided to increase its contribution for the Kai mai Road from £3 to £4 for £1 for all work still to be dona between Ngarua wabine Bridge and Barker's Corner. The increased subsidy will be paid on the contract already let to Messrs. Wilmot and Wilson, and work in hand by the department at Scott's deviation, as well as on all new work. He suggested that the council let the metalling of Scott's deviation to Messrs. Wilmot and Wilson as an extra to their present contract. The council discussed the question of raising a loan of £I3OO to lift the board subsidy, and referred the matter to a committee for further action The Minister of Public Works, Hon K. S. Williams, advised that he intended to visit Tauranga shortly. The council decided to ask the Minister to visit the district as soon as possible, when various questions affecting roads will be submitted. The question of reading as affecting certain property owners at Maicetri, was discussed, and it was decided that the original legal road be adhered to. The Rotorna County Council, in a letter relative to the Tauranga-Rotorna Road, via Oropi, stated that it was considering the question of applying, through the No. 13 District Highways Council, to declare i the road a main highway, or urging the Government to declare it a Government road. It was decided to defer the matter. The question of purchasing a reading plant was discussed at length, and deferred, the chairman, engineer and clerkto report on the financial aspect.
