THE SANDERS CUP.

Canterbury's retention of the Sanders Cup, after a series of very interesting races, entitles the successful defenders to the congratulations of the other competing provinces. This yachting trophy is one to be coveted above others. It commemorates one whose naval exploits in the war are a source of national pride, it encourages yachtsmanship of an adventurous type, and it promotes wholesome rivalry among the provinces. That these annual contests continue to attract challengers from so many quarters adds to the merit of its winning. Canterbury won it last year for the first time, and the result was acclaimed as likely to stimulate yachtsmen there, for until then it had been won by Otago twice and by Auckland three times, and on all hands it was felt to be a good thing for the trophy to go round. Competition will be all the keener next year because 'of Canterbury's second success. Yachtsmen there do not enjoy conditions as favourable as those obtaining elsewhere, and their repeated victory will encourage provinces not yet successful, while whetting the determination of previous holders to recapture it. ; -1 ,
