BOXING.
NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. PURDY'S LIGHT-WEIGHT TITLE. [by telegraph.—own correspondent. ] WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A meeting of the New Zealand Boxing Council was held last evening. It was reported that H. Leckie, the Otago professional, had taken part in two contests without having obtained a licence. It was decided to point out to associations that they were liable to a fine if they engaged boxers who had not been licensed. It was ruled that Harry Casey had been a bona-fide resident of the Dominion for twelve months and was eligible to compete for a New Zealand championship. A letter was received from the International Federation of Amateur Boxing congratulating the council on its able control of both amateur and professional boxing and admitting the affiliation of the New Zealand Boxing Association. This means that the New Zealand Association will be the only body recognised as governing boxing in this country by all the nations affiliated to the International Federation. It was unanimously agreed that Charlie Purdy was the most eligible candidate for the light-weight forfeited by Les Murray on account of his absence in America and he was unanimously awarded the title. It was decided to allow associations the option of awarding professional boxers a percentage of the gate instead of a fixed purse on condition that the percentage did not exceed £2OO. and that it was divided on the ratio of 60 per cent, for the winner and 40 per cent, for the loser.
