FIRE IM A RESERVE. ABOUT FIVE ACF.ES SWEPT. [BS TELEGRAPH. —OWN COEBESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday A fire in the reserve at South Brighton among dry lupins and long grass caused some anxiety to near-by residents last night and several houses and baches were threatened by the flames. Parties of volunteer firemen were successful in checking 4, the fire just before it reached the dwellings. , A strong north-east wind helped the flames and an area of about five acres was swept. • A grass fire on the Scarborough Hills, Sumner, yesterday was checked before any serious damage had been done.
NORTHUMBERLAND'S TRIP: SATISFACTORY PROGRESS. ARRIVING TO-MORROW MORNING. The following wireless message was sent by the steamer Northumberland to the Auckland office of™the New Zealand Shipping Company at niid-day yesterday ; —"Progressing satisfactorily and at present speed will reach Auckland Friday morning." The Northumberland left Gisbomo for Auckland on Tuesday afternoon to undergo repairs to her hull which was badly damaged when she struck a submerged rock off Gable End Foreland on January 25. On arrival she will berth at King's Wharf to unload some of the cargo in No. 2 hold, where most of the damage was done to the hull. Until she has been examined it is not certain when she will be docked.
