FIRE SWEEPS SCRUB.

EXTENSIVE AREA INVOLVED. FARMHOUSES THREATENED. FENCES AND CROPS DESTROYED. TIMELY RESCUE OF STOCK. [BT TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Hundreds of acres of scrub in the Waimakariri River bed were on fire to-day and several houses in the Harewood distric were threatened by the flames. The fire was started by one of the residents on his own property, but it got beyond his control and spread rapidly, helped by a strong north-easterly wind Many fences were burned.

Tho fire started at about 11 a.m. ,in the scrub area at the northern end of Harewood Road. It swept across coun try, doing a considerable amount of damage to hedges, fencing and hay crops Electric light power poles in Russley Road were burned, one having to be removed.'

Tho homes of five farmers were threatened, but were saved at a critical time. At one place tho fire skirted along a paddock at the back of the house, and a horse and some pigs in tho paddock were rescued just in time. Iho firo was checked just as it was catching tho house.

About 50 men were engaged in beating tho fire, which was under control in the afternoon.
