DESTRUCTION BY FIRE.
TE KUITI SHOPS BURNED,. OCCUPANTS NARROW ESCAPE, [BY TELEGRAM.—PRESI3 ASSOCIATION*!] TE KUITI, Friday. Two shops, occupied by Mrs. M. Gas* coigne, restaurant-keeper, and Mr. A. G., Mercer, tobacconist, were almost destroyed by a fire this morning. Mrs. Gascoigne had a narrow escape. A 1 boarder sleeping in a detached building gave the alarm, and tlio efforts of the brigade and the absence of wind pre-i vented the firo {spreading to adjacent; buildings. Mr. Mercer's stock Is insured ia thii National Office for £425, arid is a total loss, as are Mrs. Gaficqigno's furnituro and effects. Mrs. Gascoigna also lost £IOO in cash, which siho kept on thq premises. The buildings, which were reduced to charred shells, owned by Mr. E. Gough, builder.
OUTBREAK NEAR TAUMARUNUL BOXING- TROPHIES LOST, [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN' CORRESPONDENT. | TAUMARUNDI, Friday, An outbreak of firo at Lairdvale, two miles from Taumarunui, last evening destroyed the home of Mr. G. Venn, the former light-weight champion boxer of New Zealand. Tho dwelling comprised four rooms, together with outbuildings. As there was no water supply aval labia tho firo brigade could do nothing to quell the flames. Mr. and Mrs. Venn were absent at the time. Mr. Venn is a heavy loser. Besides personal effects ho lost all his boxing records and trophies. The insurance on the house was £3OO in the State Office, nnd on the furniture £2OO in the Southern Union Insurance Company. SEVEN-ROOMED HOUSE RAZED. IMPOSSIBLE TO SAVE, CONTENTS. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION*] LEVIN, Fri'lny. A fire occurred to-day by which a seven-roomed house, owned by Mr. .1. Ryder and occupied by Sir. V. Rcdfern. was destroyed, together with the contents, Mr. Rcdferri, with his family, went to Foxton in the morning, and no one was in the house when the fire broke out. When discovered the flames had a good hold, and it was impossible to save any of the contents. AUCKLAND OUTBREAKS. BOARDING HOUSE DAMAGED.. An outbreak of fire occurred in tia# kitchen of a two-storeyed boarding house owned by Mrs. Hansen, at 117, Victoria Street West, early yesterday morning; The City Fire Brigade confined the damage to the kitchen and a tenr bedroom, which were gutted. The house is insured for £lsoo' in the British Traders' office, and the contents for £4OO in the gam* office-. Fire broke out in a sis-roomed h r >v:e owned by Mrs. Pauline Collier, at Ktflg*way Avenue, Mount- Roskill, at about three o'clock yesterday morning.
