CRICKET CONTEST.
AUCKLAND V. WELLINGTON. NORTHERN TEAM BATTING. SEVEN WICKETS FOR 244 RUNS. [BI TETJEGR ATPH• —PRESS ASSOCIATION-] WELLINGTON, Friday. The cricket match between Auckland and Wellington was commenced to-day. Although not quite up to Plunket Shield standard the match produced some sparkling batting displays. Auckland won the toss and elected to bat. Bowley and Mills were the opening batsmen, McGirr and Massey being Wellington's bowlers. Bowley had a life before reaching double figures, but a few balls later he lifted Mitchell, who had replaced McGirr, and Hollings brought off a magnificent catch. 32 —I—l 3. Cooper, who followed, treated Mitchell with the utmost' respect. Soon after the half century Hollings took the ball from Massey and the desired effect took place, Hollings clean bowling Cooper. 67 —2—21. Gillespie joined Mills, but without any improvement to the score. McGirr skittled Mills' stumps. 67—3—29. Player was next. Soon after the tea adjournment Gillespie got in front and was out lbw. 98—4 —18. Dacro then came to the wickets. He was in a breezy mood and he opened at a lively pace, collecting 11 off ono over. Player also started to hit out, but Hollings beat him with a beauty. 120—5 —15. Postles, who came next, opened with a single. Dacro soon started to smack the bowling over the field. Massey at this stage relieved McGirr. Dacro then put one into Collins' hand. 137—6—28. Smeeton filled the vacancy, but he did not last long, for Massey clean bowled him. 151—-7 —11. Matheson followed and with Postles hit the bowling all over the field. Stumps were drawn with Postles, 50 not out, and Matheson, 45 not out. The scoro was seven wickets for 244 runs. NEW ZEALAND TEAM. SELECTION ARRANGEMENTS.; [BY TELEGRAPH.- —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] CHEISTCHURCH. Friday. The New Zealand Cricket Council recommended the selectors, Messrs. Wilson, Brico and Patrick, to submit by tho middle of January tho names of eight certainties for tho team to tour England, but it is officially stated that tho selectors will probably bo present at tho Plunket Shield match between Wellington and Auckland at Auckland and the whole team will be chosen at the conclusion of this match. In tho event of an Australian team visiting the Dominion the present intentions regarding tho time of tlia selection may bo changed.
