NEW YEAR DANCE.
A FESTIVE GATHERING, The New Year was ushered in with great gaiety and much merriment at the Masonic Hall, Princes Street, on New Year's Eva, when Mr. G. Bassant, manager of the Grand Hotel, and Mr. R. Chesney, manager of the Hotel Cargen, gave a most enjoyable dance. The party was an immense success, and the guests entered into the fun and frolic of the evening with a zest and vim that bespoke the true spirit of carnival. The festivity readied its height at twelve o'clock, Wften the hall was thrown into darkness, and New Year greetings were Hashed from an illuminated arc overhead. In accompaniment to a merry din the strains of " Auld Lang Syne" were heard, and the lights went up on a happy company, who joined hands and in hearty good fellowship sang the Old Scots refrain. Good cheer and much hilarity marked the occasion, arid the gala note was accentuated by the quaint and pretty caps worn by the dancers. These, with novel favours, had bien distributed during the evening. The hall was gaily decorated and under artistic lighting effects presented a charming scene. Round the walls green latticed screens were entwined with tropical foliage, and overhead coloured streamers, in rainbow lines, were strung into fringes and looped from wall to wall. The musicians' stand was decked with greenery, and a latticed archway, erected over the entrance, was flanked with palms and clusters of feathery bamboo,
