ASCENT IN THUNDERSTORM.
PARTY'S STRANGE EXPERIENCE.

The feat o! accomplishing a climb to thi Girdlestone Peak, Mount Ruapehu, dur| ing an unusually heavy thunderstorm was* achieved during the holidays by a party' of five men led by Mr..Hoii, of Auckland. ' Added to the unpleasant weather the I party had to contend with very hard 1 climbing conditions. The ascent was made ! from the south-eastern arete, leading up a sridge that borders the Wahianoa glacier. Startling account# of the effect of the ' electrical disturbance are given by the party, and only a strong spirit of intrepidity could have inspired the climbers to complete the.ascent. The lightning, it is reported, appeared to be striking the peak, and when within 150 ft. oI the top, shocks were experienced by every member of the party. Further phenomena to test the mettle of the mountaineers came in the v/ay of an extraordinary buzzing from the steel parts of the ice-axes, while on reaching the summit the rocks, which apparently were charged with electricity, were hissing like gas-jets,
