RACING CARNIVALS.

DERBY DAY AT ELLERSHE.

(COMMENDATION'S FINE WIN

yiCTORY FOR THE HAWK.

JCARAMU BRINGS OFF SURPRISE.

The Auckland Racing Club's Summer fdeeting was continued on Now Year's Day, when there was' an assemblage of ;27,000 at Ellerslie. A strong north-west •wind with an overcast sky was in evidence throughout the day and at one period rain threatened, but it passed off -with a mild sprinkle. The proceedings throughout wero characterised with much spirit, and with strong fields engaged in Ihe various events the racing was inTested with much interest. A trio of

surprise victories were recorded during il'.o day. Doreo (Midsummer Handicap), -Jvaramu (New Year Hurdle Race) and King Smock (Glasgow Handicap) being £ho equines to bring such about. Though the race track was not what Trould bo regarded in a lively state it provided perfect going, and the time recorded in the- Derby contest furnished pointed evidence that it had recovered splendidly from the downpour of the preceding week. An accident occurred during the running of the Newmarket Handicap. Ballyjnoy 11. and Merry Jest foil, and the jockeys, W. Jones and Lee, were hurt. ■After receiving attention on the course the injured jockeys were conveyed to the hospital.

A case to engage the attention of the 'Judicial Committee had reference to a failure on the part of the respective owners of Stormy ana! Bahama to notify a joint interest which, in acct>rda:aco with the rules, required the two horses named to be bracketed. A fine of £5 in each ■•instance was inflicted; Totalisator Receipts.

The totalisator investments during i;he 'day amounted to £98,450 10s compared with £110,652 10s on the corresponding day last year. The sum invested during the three days of the present meeting amounts to £278,603. Compared ■with last year's figures (£337,861) at a similar stage of tho summer fixture this represents a decrease of £59,250. The following were the respective amounts invested in the various events on Saturday : Ellerslie Handicap £11,439} Midsummer Handicap Jf.- ■». 13,909 New Year Hurdles . . . . 11,774 A.R.C. Handicap .. 17,840} G-reat Northern Derby 13,285 i Newmarket Handicap ** •«, 15,489 Glasgow Handicap . . . ■&, 16,710 Win for Archeno. ■ The opening event of the programme T.'as the Ellerslio Handicap, and in a field tof a dozen the three-year-old. Antrim Boy was made favourite, Haze and Archeno being most strongly supported of the other contestants. Antrim Boy filled tho xolo of pacemaker, and he flattered the hopes of his admirers until heads were fairly" in a line for home. Archeen disposed of the favourite without any trouble, and the latter failing to stay he laded out of it. Tho final stage saw Archeno galloping strongly, and he won his race in good style from tho gelding Quondong. Doree's Surprise, The Midsummer Handicap brought out it field of 13. High Finance was made favourite, Cosmetic and Royal Ceres ■being backed in that order. A surprise proved to be in store, and the favourites were all beaten in the concluding stages. Cosmetic had a slight advantage at the distance, but she was beaten at the stand, where Royal Ceres seemed likely to iscore. The final stage, however, 6aw Doree shoot np next the rails, and she won her race nicely by half a length ■from Melissa. Doree, who is a racy looking filly by Luoullus from d'Oro, carried the colours of hor breeder, Mr. T. H. •Lowry. Surprise o 1 the Day. The New Year's Hurdle Race brought put a field of fourteen, and when backers got to work they made Highway favourite, Rangatahi and Pentagram being the others most strongly supported. Another pronounced surpriso proved to be in store. When the fourth hurdle had been negotiated, Daddy's Girl, Karamu, Royal Form, and Pentagram composed tho leading division in the run up the back. Karamu streaked right away, and though Pentagram had nearly closed up the gap separating him from the leader when the last hurdle was reached, Karamu hung on well, and combating the challenge delivered by Pentagram, ho got home first by thre'e-quartors of a length. Karamu was the extreme outsider of tho field, and a solid dividend followed his victory. Karamu will bo remembered for a sensational victory which he recorded at Avondalo in the autumn of 1924, when he led the tteld home in the Hobsonville Hurdle Race, a ■dividend of several hundreds being; paid over his win. Gold Rep unseated his rider at the first hurdle, and Highway fell in negotiating tho seventh.

Footfall Scores Gamely. The Auckland Racing Club Handicap xvas the succeeding event, and when the numbers went up tor t?ie mile £.nd a-half race, it was found that Eden Hall was the only withdrawal, which loft a fine field of eighteen to contest the leading handicap event. Star Stranger was jaado favourite, with To Monanui almost as well supported. Others most strongly backed were Desert Glow, Mask, Count Cavour, Clariuda, Footfall, Mandane, Tanadees and Oreum. When the ,first three furlongs of the journey were completed Day Guard, Clarinda and Oreum composed the leaders, Star Stranger being about eighth 'and To Monanui further back. Day Guard was showing the way jit the seven furlongs post with Oreum goinf well in second place. Oreum and Day "Guard went on together for some time, when Oreum shook herseh c ear, and the daughter of Desert Gold, sfciiking along holdlv, she showed the way right into the straight, and approaching the distance she was still in the van. Trie distance, however, saw the field bunch up rapidly, and Oreum was quickly surrounded. Footfall, who was on the raus, forged to the front at the half distance, and then Count Cavour came through. The top-weight made a game bid tor \ictorv, but Footfall stayed it out well, ai d ■won! amid excitement, by three-quoiteis of a le::igih from the top weight, with ».e 'Monanui a neck awav third. Footfall had previously won races m.r a mile and a-quarter, but tue victor} he recorded at EllcrsKe on New Uar s av marked his first victory m atrace tit ending to sixteen furlongs. Footfall, vho is'thc fourth, foal of the brilliant Martian mare Warstep, carried the colours of Ins breeder, Mr. 0. G. Dalget}. Star Stranger was in a good position inside the distance, but he tailed to stay it out. and he war. the chief disappointment ot the The Derby Contest, The Great ; Northern Derby was the next event on the card, and viia a lie ( of ten produced to contest the uonoure classic event a very keen interest was manifested as the candidates came into the birdcage. Commendation having forieitca Irs engagement in the King s Plate on the second dav owing to displaying some tenderness he was eagerly scanned. I tie big son of Limond stepped round the enclosure in a manner that served to inspire complete confidence that all was well with him, and, further, that ho was quite ready for the fray. Lysander carried himself most attractively,, and though in ■stature Commendation would be adjudged more commanding the sou of Absurd would be awarded the palm for blood-like appearance. Battlement looked well and! fho gen of Martian having a yiefcory, to

his credit in a fast-run mile and threequarters race ho was considered to have good prospects of earning classic honours. True Blood, Phaola, Seatown, Alloway, Chamour, Atareria and ,Tinokoa all looked well; and altogether the Derby contestants presented a most pleasing picture as thoy filed out of the birdcage. * _ In the preliminary tion's bold action served to further inspire confidence in his ability to earn dual Derby honours; but still Lysander pleased immensely, while Battlement's resolute stylo won him a good circle of admirers. From the outset of speculation it was always made clear that Commendation would rule a warm favourite, and it was a case of odds on the Limond gelding when speculation ceased. Lysander was second favourite, and the others were backed in the following order:—Battlement, True Biood, Phaola, Seat own, Alloway, Chamour, Atareria and Tinokoa.

Directly the barrier went up Lysander was quickly into his stride and when the first three furlongs were completed the big son of Absurd was leading Commendation, with True Blood and Battlement handy, and the whole field was in close At the seven-furlongs post Commendation went up to Lysander and as the two bays ran stride for stride for next three furlongs excitement ran high. Commendation had the best of Ljsandsr at the three-furlongs post, and galloping it out in bold style he won by three lengths in a manner that showed him up in attractive colours. Alloway seemed to get the best of Lysander about the centre of the main stand, but Lysander answered the challenge in game style and the son of Absurd filled the role of runner-up. That there was no loitering on the road the time recorded (2m. 345.) amply testifies. The time record for the Great Northern Derby is held by Desert Gold, who compassed the journey in 2m. 32 3-ss. when she won the race in 1916.

After the race the pleasing ceremonv of encircling the winner's neck with the blue ribbon was performed in the birdcage by Lady Fergus.son, wife of Admiral Sir James Fergusson. Commendation at first seemed inclined to resent the adornment of his neck, but Lady Fergusson deftly encircled the ribbon, terminating the same with a neat bow, and then Mr. H. O. Nolan, vice-president of the club, called for cheers, which were responded to in a very fitting manner. The interesting record in connection with this year's Great Northern Derby is that the first and second horses were bred by Mr. G. M. Currie at Koatanui, while the first arid third horses were respectively sired by Limond, who i 3 owned by the Wanganui studmaster. The Hawk's Victory. The Newmarket Handicap brought out a field of 14, and on the strength of tho victory registered by High Pitch in the Railway Handicap on the opening day the son of Sarchedon ruled a warm favourite for the Newmarket Handicap, Limited, Ballymoy 11. and Lady Cavendish claiming most attention of the others. In the early stage of the contest Dave and Nancy Lee were the prominent actors. The distance saw half a dozen waging an interesting battle, and the issue still hung in the balance 50yds, from tho post. Hero Tho Hawk, who was in the centro of the course, came through, and the veteran, finishing up his task in game style, won by a length and a-half from Nancy Lee. King Smock's VictoryThere was a field of 23 for the Glasgow Handicap, for which Paperchase was made favourite, with Nadarino, Le Chpucas and Decoy Bird the others most strongly supported. Another surprise proved to bo in store. Nadarino, who was quickly into her stride, shot away in front, with King Smock and Delightrnent her closest attendants. Delightrnent and Nadarino were still fighting it out lor supremacy when the half-distance was reached. Thirty yards from home King Smock shot ap next the rails with a hue run, and amid much excitement he scored a half-length victory from Delightrnent. In the order of betting King Smock figured eleventh and Delightrnent fifteenth, so that it was a case of two outsiders fighting it out for the leading position.

BY ARCHER. The programme will open with the Grey Handicap and a trio that may bo solidly suported are Stormy. Antrim Boy and Raukura. Antrim Boy should be a better horse for his race on Saturday. _ The youngsters engaged in the Sylvia Handicap are not a good lot. Cosmetic and Chips have the best credentials and may share favouritism. Auratum may also receive good support. A useful field is carded for the Grandstand Handicap and fancies may take a fairly wide range. Without getting into the money Oreum, Scat and' Desert Glow hxtve raced prominently at the meeting and they may be among the popular selections. The Auckland Hurdle Race has attracted a useful field and should provide an interesting contest. Highway,. Archibald and Peter Maxwell read nicely placed and may come in for good support. A fair fieid is engaged in the Royal Stakes and among the acceptors are Gascony and Agrion. Gascony beat Agrion narrowly in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, but as the latter was b, little unlucky in that race the second meeting between the pair is being awaited with no little interest. Agrion will bo bracketed with Eulalie and the combination may start favourite. The Clifford Plate field will be small but what it lacks in numbers will be made up for in quality. Rapine, Count Cavour nnd Commendation will each have a strong following, but Rapine may start favourite. The meeting will conclude with the Bowen Handicap and it is sure to be a good betting race. Paperchase, Nancy Leo and Nadarino may bo among the popular fancies.
