CHESS CONGRESS.
iMEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT, THE FINAL STAGES REACHED. DAVIES AND DUN LOP, LEADING. Great interest is being taken in the New Zealand chess congress, play in which has now reached a critical stage. At tho conclusion of section play on Friday the scores > stood as follow: — Davies, 5 wins; Dunlop, 4;{r; Erskine, 4 ; Roberts, 3j; Severne, 3£; Moir, 3; Pleasants, 2£; Fairburn, Kelling, Bullock, 2; Miller, 2; Jones, 1£; Gyles, lJy; Burry, 1; Fouhy, 1; Fenwick, 0; Hughes, 0. Twelvo of the above players qualified for the final section with scores brought forward as follow:—Davies, 3; Dunlop, 2J,; Erskine, Moir, 2; Kelling, IJ> ; Roberts, 1£; Severne, lJg; Gyles, 1£; Fairburn, 1; Miller, 1; Pleasants, A; Bullock, 0. It will be noticed that section play operates strangely in some cases, for instance, Roberts and Severne had 3g wins in their section and carry forward only 1£ while Gyles with lj carries forward his full score and Bullock with a score ,of two goes into the final with no score.
This is owing to the fact that the scores against tho competitors who did not qualify were cancelled.
Results of tho first round in the final section are: —Bullock won from Moir; Davies won from Kelling; Gyles won from Fairburn; Dunlop won from Miller; Erskine won from Roberts; Severne axid Pleasants drew. Tho second round of the final section resulted:—Dunlop won from Bullock; Roberts won from Fairburn; Erskine won from Kelling. Gyles drew with Severne and Pleasant drew with Moir. In the game between Davies and Miller, Davies was unable to play and the game was postponed.
