SPORTS AT GISBORNE.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. [by telegraph.—press association.] GISBORNE, Saturday. The principal attraction to-day was tho first day of the Ngatapa sports at the Park Racecourse, Gisborne, at which the New Zealand professional championships were decided. The weather was fine and the attendance was between 4000 and 5000. Following are the results of the principal professional events; — IOOYds. Championship.—A. Berry (Gisborne), 1; T. Williams (Gisborne). 2: G. Murland (Gisborne). 3. Time. 30 2-ss. 440 Yds. Championship.—W. C. Preston (Whangarei). 1; G. Murland (Gisborne), 2; J. Hurrey (Gisborne), 3. Time, 535. A protest was entered against Preston on account of alleged incorrect performances at time of nomination and the protest will be considered by the Poverty Bay Centre of tho New Zealand Union on Monday morning. One Mile New Zealand Championship.— W. C. Preston (Whangarei), 1; L. Carrington (Pokaka), 2; M, Johns (Gisborne), 8. Time, 4m 375. One Mile New Zealand* Cycling Championship.—J. Henderson ((Christchurch). 1; W. Mackie (Christchurch), 2; S. McCann (New Plymouth). 3. Won by a wheel. Time. 2m 43 1-53.

Preston (10yds) was first past the post but a protest was put in against him. He was disqualified for the race, which was awarded to the second man.

The special train from Auckland was well patronised and the attendance was estimated at about 1500.
