INTEREST IN WHANGAREI. INVESTIGATIONS TO m MADE. [EY TELEGRAPH. —OWN COBRIIKPOISUENT. J WHANGAREI, Tuesday. A special committee of the Whangarei Borough Council, reporting last night upon town-planning as provided for by the new Act, asked for consideration of the acquisition oic a civic square area in Whangarei. Nowadays, said tho Mayor, Mr. J. E. Holmes, it was considered a desirable provision that every town should have a gathering place somewhere in an open space, round which the principle buildings would gravitate. In Whangarei the first place that one would think of as suitable would be on Harrison's Fla.t, between Bank Street and Rathhone or Jannis Street. There werD other suitable areas, further away on the fiat and in the vicinity of Walton Street or the Triangle. It was explained by Mr. R. S. Finch that owners having frontages to a civic square would, have to pay at least 50 per cent, of the cost of betterment. The Mayor, Mr. W. Timowcll, jand Mr. A. T. Brainsby were appointed a committee to consider suitable site-i for a civici square and to report.
