HOSPITALS IN AUSTRALIA.

THE VOLUNTARY SYSTEM. IMPRESSIONS OF DR. MAGUIRE. Impressions of Sydney hospitals were given by. Dr. C.- E. Maguire, superintendent of the Auckland Hospital, who returned from a short visit to Australia by tho Maunganui yesterday. Dr. Maguire said he especially inspected kitchens in Sydney hospitals with a view to advising tho Auckland Hosptal Board on the reorganisation of the hospital kitchen. "I addressed the governing body of the i North Sydney Hospital ou hospital administration in New Zealand and keen interest was displayed," stated Dr. Maguire. "Sydney hospitals are very up-to-date, but no "more so than our hospitals. Australia has not advanced any more than New Zealand has in hospital administration. We have nothing to learn from them in tho matter of equipment." Speaking of the voluntary system of raising funds for Sydney hospitals by means of public subscription, Dr. Maguire said tho question was giving the Government much thought. While the public had been wonderfully generous 3nd had taken great interest in'the hospitals, they could not be expected to go on contributing large sums for ever. The Government was continually giving subsidies to wipe off debts and thus keep the hospitals going. Asked whether Australian hospitals .1 experimented with radio, Dr. Maguire said some of tho hospitals had been equipped with receiving sets and head phones and the experiments were a wonderful success. It was found that radio was a tremendous help in tho treatment of patients and many who previously were unable to sleep now slept well. I aid verv much in favour of radio at our hospital," added Dr. Maguire. " I would like to see it installed as soon as possible. It has proved a success in England and America and will. I am sure, do good here."
