POISON LAID FOR CATS.

VALUABLE DOGS KILLED. OFFENCE IN A BOROUGH. The fact that it is illegal to lay poison anywhere within a borough was made clear in the Police Court yesterday when Louis Melhose was charged with laying strychnine adjacent to a public place in North Avenue, Devonport. Senior-Sergeant Edwards said defendant laid poison to kill cats, but killed his neighbour's valuable dogs. It was an offence to lay poison anywhere in a borough whether adjacent to a public place or not. The magistrate, Mr. Hunt, imposed a fine of £5. Defendant later appealed for a reduction of the fine, stating that last year a number of his valuable chickens had been killed by cats. This year he laid poison for the cats, but the dogs got through the fence. The chemist from whom he obtained the poison told him it was permissible to lay it on hi,s own property. The Borough Council openly advertised that it would give away poison to kill rats. ' The fine was reduced to £l.
