A working profit of £64,125. is shown by the Railway Department's working account for the four weeks ended November 13. The corresponding return last year was £87,401. The receipts comprised £320,455 from the North Island railways, £204,639 from trie South Island railways, and £40,833* from miscellaneous services—a total of £565,927. The correspond.ng expenditure was £262,751 £214,628 and £24,420 respectively—the total being £501,802. The North Island railways thus earned 3 profit of £57,701, but there was a. loss on working in the South Island of £9989. The excess of receipts from miscellaneous services was £16,413.
