EARNINGS OF RAILWAYS.

RETURN AGAIN LOWER. - DECLINING PROFITS IN NORTH.' LOSS IN SOUTH CONTINUES. [BY TELEGRAPH. —t)WN CORttESKINBEN-T.] V* ELLINGTON, Thursday. A working profit of £64,125. is shown by the Railway Department's working account for the four weeks ended November 13. The corresponding return last year was £87,401. The receipts comprised £320,455 from the North Island railways, £204,639 from trie South Island railways, and £40,833* from miscellaneous services—a total of £565,927. The correspond.ng expenditure was £262,751 £214,628 and £24,420 respectively—the total being £501,802. The North Island railways thus earned 3 profit of £57,701, but there was a. loss on working in the South Island of £9989. The excess of receipts from miscellaneous services was £16,413. The net return for the first 32 weeks (actually 221 days') of last year was £613,947, so that the latest returns {covering 227 days) show an increase cf £26,890. The increase comprises gains in the South Island of £59,123, ai'd in net miscellaneous receipts of £17,354, but the net revenue in the North Island shows a decline of £49,587.
