The Auckland City Council, as the No. 1 Licensing Authority, refused the Auck-■ land City Council a licence to run buses. The city councillors should not be dowru hearted. They should buy this week's issue of the New Zealand Observer, the Dominion's brightest and best illustrated weekly newspaper, and in it they will find reference to many matters of interest, including the proposed park on the Waitakere Ranges. The current issue contains among other articles, " Dead Sea Fruit— Control of New Zealand Butter," "China's Awakening," " Concerning the Price of Wool and Butter," and " The Waitakere Ranges." The illustrations include the cartoons by Bio. " New Zealand's Crown of Loyalty," and " Fed Up on Waitakere Land, Auckland Cries For a Change of Fare," and a page of sketches, " A Bunch of Tram Tickets," being snaps of leading lights at the Auckland Tramway Sports' Club prize-giving social. There are some sensational photographs taken at the Motor-cycle Hill Climb and a group of young Aucklanders who play in the Catholic Primary Schools Cricket Association. The Radio and Motoring Notes are up to their usual high standard and the Racing Commissioner has something to say about the form of horses engaged at Dargaville. The Observer is on sale at all booksellers, price threepence, or 3s 6d per quarter. Give your boy or girl a book for Christmas, and you may make all the difference to that child. A good book may make a wonderful impression on a child, just at the plastic age, and your son or growing young daughter be thankful for that gift all the days of her life. A book is a useful, enjoyable and lasting present. Obtain Xrnas cards, fancy calendars 1927, auto Xmas stationery.—Wildman and 1 Arey's special card room,, Shortland St„
