A NEWSPAPER'S JUBILEE.
THE HISTORY OF NELSON. The diamond jubilee of the Nelson Evening Mail, the first daily 'newspaper established in Nelson, was celebrated by that journal on Saturday last by the publication of a special number. The issuo consists of 40 pages of interesting articles concerning the founding of Nelson and the subsequent ups and downs, and ultimate prosperity of the district, | in which the first European settlement in the South Island was planted by the New Zealand Company 85 years ago. A special feature is a series of extracts from the diary of Captain Arthur Wakefield, tha " Father of Nelson," which are now for the_ first time published. Other articles include an account of Abel Tasman's historic voyage to New Zealand waters nearly 300 years ago, the history of the Church Hill on which Nelson Cathedral stands, the story of the first exploration of the West Coast of the South Island SO years ago by Mr. Thomas Brunner, and the reminiscences of Archbishop Redwood and other early Nelson settlers. There is also a collection of photographs of about 50 of the most prominent of early Nelsonians, These include Sir Edward Stafford, Mr, Alfred Domett, Sir William Fox—each of whom wag; among New Zealand's early Premiers—Sir Francis Dillon Bell—father of the present Sir Francis Bell—Sir David Monro—second Speaker of the House of Representatives—and the Rev. Samuel Ironsides, who buried the victims of the Wairau massacre in 1843. Many interesting photographs and sketches of the early days of Nelson are also reproduced. Valuable assistance in the compilation of the number was given by Dr. F. A. Bett, of Nelson, who a few years ago took up the task of collecting the records of the early history of the province. j
