CHILDREN AND MILK.
Tho Dairy, an English publication, says: —Tho national scheme for teaching school children the food value of milk makes steady progress. Gloucestershire, Shropshire, and Hampshire have already taken advantage of the scheme, and the campaign is now in operation in Dorset.
Under the scheme the National Milk Publicity Council sends down to any English county, free of charge, its trained lecturers, who visit all the schools, Women's Institutes, Welfare Centres and other institutions, and conduct clean milk exhibitions. Prizes are given to the children for the best essays on the food value of milk. The education authorities of Gloucestershire, Shropshire and Hampshire have acknowledged the great value of these campaigns to the community. A report of the Hampshire campaign, which has just been completed, shows the exhaustive manner in which the council carries out its work. During April, 143 lectures were given in that county to audiences numbering 10,622, and 215,230 leaflets distributed. In' May, notwithstanding the general strike, 137 lectures were given to §?6O people, and 163,201 leaflets were circulated. Every school in the countynumbering in all 389—(with the exception of three where there was an epidemic), was visited, and 713 lectures were given. Ninety-two Women's Institutes were attended by the lecturers, with the result that many return visits were arranged for cooking demonstrations. The average cost of each of these campaigns is between £SOO and £6OO, and the results are considered so satisfactory that the National Milk Publicity Council invite other county 'education authorities to institute similar campaigns at their expense. The Gloucester campaign was particularly effective, 800 lectures attracting as many as 50,000 listeners, while in Shropshire 383 lectures were given to 20,000 people..
