ASHES CAST ON OCEAN.
OLD MARINER'S BURIAL CEREMONY OFF LYTTELTON. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. That after his death his body be cremated and the ashes taken charge of by members of the Lyttelton Kilwinning Masonic Lodge, who were to deposit them, 10 miles off tho Lyttelton Heads, upon the ocean where he had spent so many years of Ins-life, was a request made in the will of the late Captain William Palmer Collins, an old master mariner, of Lyttelton, who died recently at Wellington and who was for many years in command of vessels belonging to the Union Steam Ship Company. In accordance with his wish Captain Collins' body was cremated at Karon cemetery and the casket containing the ashes was brought to Lyttelton during ' the week-end and deposited in the Kil winning Masonic Lodge Hall. Later the casket was taken on board the s.s. John Anderson and conveyed to a spot 10 miles off the Lyttelton Heads, where it was deposited in .the sea. The lodge chaplain officiated and about 60 members of the lodge witnessed the ceremony. This is thought to be the first time that such a request has been made in New Zealand. , . ■-» - <tss
