WOOL PRICES HIGHER.
' ; f - ij. in mi■ iir - mm INCREASE AT WELLINGTON. KEEN BIDDING BY BUYERS. A GOOD CLEARANCE MADE. BRADFORD THE MOST ACTIVE. [bk telegraph.—own correspondent.] WELLINGTON, Monday. The second Wellington wool sale of this Benson, held in the I own Hall to-day, resulted in a good clearance, and prices, instead of-reflecting the 5 per cent, fall shown by the November and December London sales as compared with the September and October London sales, were an improvement on the November prices. IA.II countries were represented and competition was good. Wet weather has retarded shearing and the total submitted was 19,481 bales, as compared with 25,300 bales at the Wellington December sale last year. Summing up the conditions of the sale, the chairman of the Wellington Woolbrokers' Association, Mr. 11. G. Anderson, said the bidding was keen and also general. As compared with November prices, average wools were lip a halfpenny and super wools one penny. The selection was a good one, well-grown, sound in staple and fairly light in condition. Bradford was the principal buyer. The Continent was in the market for suitable lots and America was active. French buyers sought fine pieces, for which they paid almost fleece prices. "The amount of good wools going to London is neglible," said a well-known observer of to-day's wool sale. "London is in danger of becoming a second-hand market." - He stated that- sales in the countries of production, had become so' important that thsy were setting the prices and were no logger ruled by London ideas of values. The Wellington sale to-day showed an appreciation and took no heed of the 5 per cent: drop at the London November and December sales as compared with the London September and October sales. As a' result, some of the principal British buyers operating on British limits were repeatedly beaten at to-day's sale by smaller buyers. They had fallen short of the-competitive level set by the world's buyers at sales in the country of production. Australian sale prices weighed more in the wool world to-day than London sale prices. .The range of prices was as follow: Merino— d. d.
