OBITUARY.
,i■ i ■ M. CLAUDE MONET. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Heed. 5.5 p.m.) PARIS. Dec. G. The death is announced of M. Claude Monet, the famous painter. The late M. Claude Monet, who was 86 years of ago, was a native of Paris. He was one of the founders of what is known as the Impressionist School of Painters. At the age of 25 he sent in a picture, entitled, "Woman in a Green Dress," to the French Salon, which rejected the innovation. The great novelist' Zola started a campaign on* his behalf, and the picture priced by the painter at £32 —was sold for £ISOO. The Salon still refused his paintings and he, with others who became famous, including Pissaro, Manet and Degas, in 1874, formed a group and held their own exhibition. However, in 1914, the works of Monet, of great repute by this time outside France, were admitted to the Louvre, the rule that no living painter should be represented there being broken in Monet's favour. His landscapes in bright sunlight are famous. Always his own sternest critic, in 1904 he destroyed the work of several years, paintings of still water in various lights, though their market value was well over £20,000. Monet and M. Clemenceau, the " Tiger," were great friends. IRISH CENTENARIAN. MR. FELIX MORGAN. A. and N.Z. LONDON. Dec. 5.
