STUDENTS FROM DOMINION,

FINAL SELECTION MADE.

MR HASLAM AND MR KALAUGHER

The selection was made to-day of the two New Zealand Rhodes Scholars, the choice falling upon Mr. A. L. Haslam (Canterbury) and Mr. W. Kalaugher (Wellington). The eight candidates, two from each of the four centres, were in attendance today at the meeting of the Board of Selection, each being interviewed. After further deliberation, the announcement was made as to upon whom the choice had fallen.

Mr. Wilfrid G. Kalaugher, M.A., Victoria University College, was born in 1904, and was educated at the following schools and colleges:—Winchester school (South Canterbury), Stanley Bay school (Auckland), Sacred Heart College (Auckland), Auckland University College (192224), and Victoria University College, Wellington. He took his M.A. degree with first-class honours in mathematics in 1925. He was a good all-round athlete, and represented Auckland University for three years in athletic events. He was high jump champion and record-holder of the New Zealand University, and was one of the best all-round jumpers and hurdlers in New Zealand. Mr. A. L. Haslam is a son of Mr. C. N. Haslam, of Merivale, Christchurch, and is 22 years old. His scholastic record is one of the most brilliant in New Zealand, and he is a keen and popular sportsm in. He received his primary education at Island Bay, Wellington, where he secured a Junior National Scholarship and went on to Wellington College. He remained there for three years and left for Waitaki Boys' High School with a Senior National Scholarship to his credit. He was one of Waitaki's most brilliant scholars, winning "a Junior University Scholarship, when he was second on the New Zealand list He was also dux of the school.

On leaving Waitaki he became an undergraduate of Canterbury College, where ho gained his LL.B. and LL.M. degrees, in his third and fourth years respectively, the latter with first-class honours. He was at this time with the firm of Garrick, Cowlishaw and Company, solicitors, and for the last two years has been with Mr. C. S. Thomas. Mr. Haslam has taken a keen interest in athletics and has specialised in distance running and hurdling, at which he excels. He is a member of the Canterbury Rowing Club and the Harewood Golf Club, and has taken a prominent part in the activities of Canterbury College, being distinguished in debating circles.

At a meeting last evening of the committee which is arranging the celebrations of the Marist Brothers' jubilee. Brother Borgia, director of the Sacred Heart College, was extended the congratulations of the meeting on the success of Mr. Kalaugher, a former pupil of the college.
