A site in Queen Street, Auckland, just beyond Wyndham Street, and next door to the Bank of Australasia, with a frontage of to Queen Street and a depth of 115 ft. has been acquired by the Colonial Mutual Insurance Company for the purpose of erecting a 10-storey building, including the basement.
The ground floor will contain four lock-up shops, each with a strong-room in the basement. The offices o! the Colonial Mutual will be on the ground floor, while the balance of the ground floor not used by the company will be for letting purposes. Seven of the floors above the ground floor will contain offices and strong-rooms for letting purposes, while on the ninth floor will be two sets of living quarters for the janitors.
The building is to be built with a steel frame and reinforced concrete and is to have a slung verandah. The contractors will be allowed about 19 months to complete the work, which is to begin in January next year. The architects are Messrs. Swan, Lawrence and Swan, ■of Wellington.
