THE WOOL SALE.
For the first Auckland wool sale of the season to have produced prices in advance of those realised at Wellington, Wanganui and Napier is a substantial cause for satisfaction. The feeling is confirmed and enhanced by the official report of the brokers, attributing this condition largely to the excellent quality of the offerings. As it states, the farmers are evidently applying the advice so often given them to class and prepare their wool for the market attractively. To find Auckland thus outstripping Southern districts long supposed to be far ahead of this province in wool production is indeed gratifying. Something must be allowed for the unfavour able conditions experienced, especially by Hawke's Bay. Yet Auckland has had what is generally classed as a bad spring, but has been able to please critical buyers in spite of it. For the better class of wool coming forward, credit is given the determination in growers to breed for quality. They have, in fact, evidently learned a lesson parallel to that applied by the dairy farmer who tests carefully and cuils. Both are now reaping the advantage of relying for profits on high quality stock. To the woolgrower this is a very sound insurance against fluctuations of the market. Even if prices go down, the advantage of being at the top of the market needs no demonstration. Also, as the representative of the brokers said, with a stabilised market it is quality that stimulates demand to its keenest point. To sum up, therefore, the sale shows how the sheepfarmer is reaping his reward for having worked hard to improve his output, both by. breeding to raise its quality and by preparing the wool to bring out its merits. Also, since in a season when conditions have admittedly been far from good, Auckland has come out very well compared with other districts, it is evident that the great asset of the province, its climate, ihas helped the farmer to obtain these results. The wool sale has brightened the whole outlook.
