THOMSON'S "WINTER."
Among this year's bicentenaries is that of Thomson's "Winter," the first of his "Seasons." .Thomson, intended for the Scottish Ministry, was determined to be a poet, and went to London without any clear idea of how he was going to live. He was for a time a private tutor, but tired of that and went to live with Mallet at Twyfordj he " wrote single winter pieces; they at last thought it might make a poem." ""His first want," says Johnson, "wa£ a pair of shoes. For the supply of all his necessities, his whole fund was his 'Winter,' which for a time- could find no purchaser; till at last Mr. Millan was persuaded to buy it at a low price, and this low price he had for some time reason to regret!" ,
