A BUTCHER'S HOURS.
CASE FROM HAMILTON
The status of a Hamilton batcher, E. T. Hales, was discussed in the Arbitration Court yesterday, when the Hamilton Master Butchers' Association supported |an application to have him joined as a I party to the Butchers' Award and applied for the cancelling of his exemption | from the observance of the ordinary closing hour of 5 p.m. Mr. D. Seymour appeared for the association and Mr. N. S. Johnson for Hales. Mr. Seymour said Hales had been granted an exemption in regard to hours on the ground that ho was » pork butcher, but actually he was more a butcher than a pork butcher. 1 here were twenty butchers' shops in Hamilton to serve a population of 20,003, and Hales gained an advantage over his competitors by being able to keep open after 5 p.m. Mr. Justice Eraser struck out the application to join Hales as a party to the award, on the ground that he was already a party. Regarding the other, he agreed that pork butchers who sold sausages and small goods competed with ordinary butchers in these lines. The Auckland award made special provision ror them, but the Hamilton award did •tOl The hearing was adjourned until next week in order that Hales might attend and give evidence about the nature of his business.
