FAILURE TO ACCOUNT.

POSITION DUE TO MUDDLING.

JUDGE TAKES LENIENT VIEW.

[by telegraph.—own correspondent.]

CHRISTCHURCH. Friday

Probation was granted to William Francis Halliburton, of Ashburton, when he came up for sentence in the Supreme Court to-day for receiving £152 18s lid and failing to account for it and for stealing £504 15s lid from Mrs. M. S. McArthur.

Mr.- Justice Stringer said the case gave him much anxiety. He believed that Halliburton had not intended dishonestly to appropriate the moneys and would have repaid except for the failure of his business, resulting from the slump in land values.

In admitting Halliburton to probation for two years, the Judge said that Halliburton's position was due to muddling methods of business. Halliburton was ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution, £2l 13s Bd, within three months, and thereafter to make restitution as directed by the probation, officer.
