WOOL PRICES MAINTAINED.

SUCCESSFUL FIRST SALE.

SOUTHERN RATES EXCEEDED.

AN EXCELLENT CLEARANCE.

NINETY-FIVE PER CENT. SOLD

The first wool sale of the season ii [Auckland was concluded at the Towi Hall concert chamber yesterday. Tin total offering -it th sale was 18,155 I.ales of which approximately 9000 were sold or Thursday evening, and a very satisfactory clearance was effected, approximately 9; per cent, being disposed of. Details of the catalogue and the ordei of selling are as follows: Bales, Pulgety and Company, Limited, and the North Auckland Farmers' Co-operative, Limited . . 6.43; 'Abraham and Williams, Limited Alfred Buckland and Sons. Lid. 2,01£ Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Company Ltd . . . . 3,034 New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd. . . 4,112 Total 18,155 The, official report of the Wooibrokers' 'Association the sale opened with a strong demand, the bidding being spirited and general. These conditions were maintained throughout the sale. Prices, compared with those realised at the three previous sales hold in New Zealand this season, showed a considerable advance, but in recording this advance the qualitv of the wool had to be taken into account. The Auckland clip offered at the saio represented the best quality wool so far presented to the buyers this season The good clearance effected was due in large measure to the increased competition by Continental buyers compared with their operations at the Southern sales. The top price of paid on Thursday for a nice line of halfbred from Waiheke was not equalled yesterday. The next highest price ot 19d was paid for a line of seven bales of excellent quarterbred from Ponui, another island in the Hauls ki Gulf An analysis oi the prices shows the bulk of the grower will receive slightly less than was realised at the corresponding sale of last-season. However, values for crossbreds, which comprise the bulk of the Auckland clip, were appreciably better than thos: established at the February sale last season. Bellies and pieces, crutchings and locks also made better prices than those obtained in February. The following table gives the range of prices realised at the sale, compared with the opening sale of last season;—

Commenting on the sale Mr. H. I>. Robinson, chairman of the Auckland Woolbrokors' Association, said the results ' were considered by the brokers to bo most ; | satisfactory. The Continental buyers com- . peted strongly with Bradford and secured many excellent lines. This increased competition, combined with the fact that the wool was of outstanding quality, contri- 1 buted to the very healthy tone that was maintained throughout the sale. ' Mr. Robmso"n said' he had witnessed 1 many wool sales and had never seen 1 keener competition among buyers. It was 1 undoubtedly the most spirited bidding s that had ever been seen m Auckland. As the various lots were put up buyers often bid to their limit without any attempt to secure a lot at a figure below their own valuation. As a result the catalogues were got through in record time. A gratifying feature and a good augury for future safes this season was the fact that there was no slackening in the bidding. the demand being just as keen at the finish as it was at the beginning. The Auckland wool growers, said Mr. Robinson, had to be congratulated on the improvement in the quality of their wool during recent years. This improvement had been a gradual process coincident with the development of the province and snould have a marked effect on the future prosperity of the district. With the market'stabilised at what he termed reasonable _ crices good quality was essential in obtaining for the grower the demand and full value for his clip. WOOL BUYERS DEPAET. SPECIAL CARRIAGES USED. The buyers who attended the wool sale in Auckland left for Wellington by train last evenmg. For their accommodation a special sleeping carriage was added to the limited express, while another carriage was reserved on the second express.
