UPKEEP OF HIGHWAYS.
LARGER SUBSIDIES URGED. [liT? TELEGRAPH. —OWIJ CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Thursday. The necessity for an increased subsidy for road reconstruction work was urged in the following remit carried by the conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce to-day: "In view of the fact that the main highways, particularly in the vicinity of cities and towns, have" not been improved as a result of the operation of- the Main Highways Act, that the Highways Board (in 'order t-o encourage the reconstruction of roads where it is considered necessary), be requested to substantially increase their subsidy for reconstruction work."
