SEQUEL TO A COLLISION.
MEAT VAN AND CYCLIST. JURY AWARDS DAMAGES. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. A collision between a large meat van and a motor-cycle on the ChristchurchSockburn Road on April 9 resulted in a claim for £l2lß lis 9d in the Supreme Court to-day, before Mr. Justice Stringer and a jury of 12. Bernard Noel Thomas, of Darfield, farm manager, sued George Rae Percy, of Christchurch, cartage contractor, for the sum stated. Thomas alleged that Percy was driving on his wrong side at an excessive speed, was not keeping a proper look-out and did not exercise proper control of his van at the time of, and immediately before, the accident. Thomas described his injuries as a compound fracture of the right tibia, wounds on the leg about an inch long, and wounds on the ankle joint and on the foot. Percy stated that he was on his proper side until within 70 yards of the scene of the accident. He pulled out wide to pass a gig, saw the motor-cycle and turned to the centre of the road again. The motor-cycle turned in the same direction. Ho thought that the motor-cyclist was free of him, but the motor-cycle struck the back of the van, missing the front. The jury awarded plaintiff £633 16s 3d damages and judgment was entered accordingly, with costs.
