SYDNEY AND CORINTH.
A COMPARISON RESENTED. [FBOM OtJE OWN CORRESPONDENT.] SYDNEY. Nov 11 A prominent Sydney clergyman has been coming in for a good deal ol limelight the last day or two, and not a little adverse criticism, also, for having, from the pulpit, compared Sydney with ancient Corinth, which was noted for its base materialism and its luxury and extrava gance. Those who are pouring their broadsides into the clergyman point out,*in effect, that there is no proof that Sydney is any worse than any other metropolis of a million people. It is argued that Sydney's cultural development is not altogether incompatible with its material development, and that at the higto tension at which people live in a big and crowded city, the love of pleasure is a natural corollary At any rate, the police of Sydney have not yet to patrol the city in armoured cars, carrying shot guns and bombs, in order that an election may be conducted safely This, apparently, is what is happening 111 one oi the law-abiding cities of America, according to the cablegrams.
