TWO MACHINE-GUN MATCHES: All tlie units in the No. 1 Regimental • District were represented at the annual , rifle meeting, which opened at the Pent rose range yesterday. The entries i totalled 340, compared with 400 last year, i Secondary schools riflemen were most in , evidencp yesterday. The opeji contests . will take place to-day, when the meeting will conclude. A strong wind from the north-west , made conditions difficult for the marksmen, especially on the big range. In spite of this handicap a very creditable standard was set. Colonel H. R. Potter, Officer Commanding the . Northern Command, who visited the range in the afternoon, expressed his pleasure at the keenness of the competitors and the standard of the shooting. An interesting feature of the programme was the machine-gun matches, there being competitions for both Vickers and Lewis gnns. These matches were carried out under the supervision of Major J A. Walhngford, M.C., and vere fired on the long range. In the Vickers gun match the teams comprised a leader and four men, while in the Lewis gun match the teams comprised a lead and three men. Both competitions proved highly spectacular. The results were as follow: - Vickers Gun Match.—Headquarters Wing Ist Battalion, Auckland Regiment, i Eight teams competed. Lewis Gun Match.—B Company, Ist Battalion, Auckland Regiment. Nineteen teams competed. The programme includes, in addition, two matches for cadets under 16, to be fired with miniature cartridges on the 25yds. range; four matches for the artisan cadets under 18 with the service rifle on 25yds., 200 yds. and 300 yds. ranges; four matches for secondary schools cadets under the same conditions; three matches for naval recruits, territorials and. senior cadets at 200, 300 and 500 yards. In connection with the special matches for the artisan cadets, secondary schools cadets, and naval and territorial units, medals will be awarded on the aggregate number of points. There are three matches for teams of six_. The results of yesterday's shooting will not be known until the completion of the programme to-day.
