ASSAULT BY MAORI.

SPADE HANDLE AS WEAPON. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] OPOTIKI, - londay. A Maori, Thomas Hape, was charged in the Police Court, before justices, this afternoon, with assaulting V. Creugnet at Kutarere. Accused was fined £lO, in default one month's imprisonment. Half the fine is to go to Creugnet. The evidence showed that accused, under the influence of liquor, violently assaulted Creugnet, striking him over the head with a spade handle.
