MR. CAUGHLEY TO RETIRE.

Caughley, has given notice of his intention to retire on superannuation at the end of this year, when he will have completed 40 years' service. Mr. CaugbJey was bora in Auckland in 1871 and was a pupil of., the Alexandra Street and Baresford Street schools antil his family moved to Napier, where he was at. school for another three years. For five years ho served as a pupil teacher in the Hastings District School and for eight and, ahalf years as assistant master in the Napier Main School. Then for about six years he was headmaster of a country school, at Kaikcura North, it.ow known as Ofcane.. His next position was that cf assistant Ira charge of the secondary (passes and instructor in science at the Normal College and Training School, Wellington. After filling thupost for four years, Mr. Caughley was appointed headmaster of the. West Christchuxch District High School, the secondary department of which contained 200 pupils, and had a stafT of nix asstßt.&nifi. While thare Mr. Caughley become recognised as one of the foremost teacher.'i in the Dominion. At various times he occuSied the highest official: positions in tho few Zealand Educational Institute, juid throughout his teaching career he-teolk a prominent part in the activities of the organisation. At the beginning of 1916 Mr. Caughley was appointed • assistant director of education, rendered vacant by the promotion of Dr. W. J. Anderson to the position' of director of 'this department. When Dr. Anderson retired in February, 1921, Mr. Caughley 3ticcceded him in the position of director of education, and under him the department, steadily developed. Among the iWthres of his administration was the introduction of the system of junior high schools.
