REQUEST BY FISHERMEN.
PROPOSED RETAIL MARKET. DEPUTATION TO THE MAYOR. Seine fishermen who work the fishing grounds in the Hauraki Gulf with small boats are desirous of having a municipal depot where they "can concentrate their catches and sell to the public. A. scheme of this nature was yesterday suggested to'the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, by a deputation ot fishermen representng the owners of 25 fishing-boats. The spokesmen. Messrs. Knaggs, Wlson and Mansfield, said that hitherto they had boon selling their fish to private firms which had provided them with cool storage for the holding of surplus supplies, but these facilities were no longer available. It was suggested to the Mayor that a municipal market on the lines of that available to the growers of fruit and vegetables might be established on the waterfront with facilities for cleaning and smoking fish and possibly a freezer for taking care of the surplus when catches were plentiful. They were forming nn association and would be in a position to make representations on behalf of all men who were working their own boats. With a market such as suggested regular supplies of fish could be offered to the public and at prices lower than those now ruling. The Mayor after discussing the possibilities of the proposal promised to call a meeting of the Stores and Markets Committee of the council for to-morrow, when three of the fishermen could attend and state their case.
