THE CIVIC SQUARE.
Sir, —While the City Fathers are still wallowing in the mire of indecision, and pulling their hoary locks over the vexed question of "what shall we do with our vacant square?" might a humble citizen of your Queen City make a suggestion that to his mind would bo exceedingly advantageous and would help to alleviate the congestion of traffic in our main thoroughfare? Let me take you down —figuratively, of course—to the "City of the Plains," and you will find that the system employed there works admirably, viz., making Cathedral Square tha starting point for all outward-bo'and cars. Now, by converting this "square" into a rendezvous for all tram cars and building a shelter shed for waiting passieagers, together with a small office let tramway officials, it would be making & profitable use of this piece oi ground, and concentrating the traffic. As it is at present, practically all trams run to the foot of Queen Street, which any sane pereqn knows to be an unprofitable and not necessary arrangement. Also the destination boards affixed to the cars are very misleading, as I've seen these boards changed for the outward-bound journey at the junction of Symonds and Wellasley Streets. This procedure to a stranger is very misleading.. The place tinder discussion is practically the centre of the city, and I think that something after the manner suggested would be a satisfactory solution of this much-discussed question. P» ogress.
