BOLD ATTEMPT AT FRAUD. LETTER LEADS TO DETENTION. [BY TEI.EG RA PH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. 3 WELLINGTON. Tuesday. After a retirement of 20 minutes the jury in the Supreme Court, to-day returned a verdict of guilty against Robert Campbell, who was charged with what the Crown Prosecutor described as a very bold and brazen attempt to defraud the Commercial Bank of £586. Calling at the bank on August II the accused opened an account and informed the bank officials that he had some money to his ctfedit in the bank at Auckland. Receiving a cheque book he subsequently wrote out. a cheque for £2. This was given to the ledgerkeeper, who marked it with his initials, V.E. and N. Accused, not knowing that the marking N. represented £2, later made out a cheque for £586 with V.E. and N. marked on it. This fact was noticed by the officials and when accuser! was questioned concerning the cheque he seized it, but the ledgerkeeper retained the portion with the.initials on it. Accused had had an account in Auckland, but it had been closed in 1921. Sentence was deferred until to morrow.
