INCOME TAX RETURNS.
THE ODLIN PROSECUTIONS. END OF THE PROCEEDINGS. REMAINING CHARGES WITHDRAWN [BV TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT ] WELLINGTON. Friday. The remaining charges against Charles Camperdown Odlin of making false in-come-tax returns and aiding and abetting the C. and A. Odlin Timber and Hardware Company in making false income-tax returns, were withdrawn by the Crown in the Police Court" io-day. Mr. Tudhope, for the Land and Income Tax Department, said there were eight informations against Odlin, four of making false returns in respect of the income of the company and four charges of aiding and abetting the company. They were two sets of alternative informations. Odlin had already been fined £4OO on charges of making false returns and the company had also been finjd a. similar amount. Against these convictions the company appealed to the Supreme Court, but the appeal was absolutely and unconditionally abandoned. Mr. Tudhope said he wanted to emphasise the fact that the appeals had been unconditionally abandoned. There had been no settlement and no concession had been made by the commissioner of taxes. As the company and Odlin had been convicted it was considered the ends of justice would be met if the eight informations against Odlin in respect of the same set of acts and transactions were withdrawn. Permission to withdraw the charges was grarfted by the magistrate, Mr. E. Page.
