WATERSIDE WORKER KILLED.
STRUCK BY COAL BASKET
MISHAP DURING UNLOADING.
A waterside worker x Mr. Samuel Russell, singlo, aged 56, residing at 70, Belgium Street, was fatally injured while unloading coal from the Union Company's steamer Kauri at King's Wharf yesterday afternoon. About a quarter to four Mr. Russell was engaged in unloading from No. 3 hatch. An empty basket had been lowered to tho hold, detached from the hook and a full one substituted. The signal was then given to haul the basket up, but in some* way the empty basket became attached to it and was also hauled up. However, after being hauled for about Bft., the empty basket became disengaged and fell, striking Mr. Russell on the head. The blow stunned him and he was re. moved to the hospital unconscious. Death ensued about four hours later.
