CEDAR, WEATHERBOARDS.
AVONDALE PROHIBITION.
The use of cedar weatherboards is not permitted by tho building by-laws of the Avondale Borough Council, and work on a building in tho district has been held up through tho decision of the council to enforce tho regulation. The builder had placed-an order for cedar weatherboards, but after a sample was submitted to the council approval was refused. Exception has been taken to this action, and it is suggested by builders that the by-lav/ should he amended, since the timber has been used before in tho borough, and there is r,o evidence that it is unsuitable for exterior use.
The Avondale by-law stipulates that weatherboards shall be heart of kauri, rimu, totara, or matai. Tho Auckland City by-law provides that timber for external "work shall he": "Heart of kauri, rimu, totara, oregon, or other approved material." Cedar has been classed as an "approved material," and a number of buildings have been erected in this timber during the past few years. Mr. W. B. Leyland stated recently that there could be no objection to cedar on the grounds of durability. It was an excellent timber for exterior use, end would resist heat and damp without distorting. Cedar was tho most popular timber in the United States for weatherboards, and 70 per cent, of wooden shingles were of this timber. The light markings in cedar were often mistaken for sap, but the wood was very free from softness.
