PIGEON SHOOTING.
AN OUTGRY IN SYDNEY. PROTEST AGAINST MATCHES. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] SYDNEY. Aug. 14. There have been heated protests in the press lately against the cruelty of pigeon shooting matches and against the toleration by successive Governments of a practice which, it is claimed, does not give the birds even a fair chance of escape. So far, no one has entered the lists in support of pigeon shooting. It is urged that the Government should follow the lead of the authorities in England, America and even Monte Carlo, and make illegal the use of live birds for this purpose. Among 'those who have written is Archdeacon d'Arcy Irvine, one of the pillars of the Anglican Church, who appears in print oniy under the strongest provocation. About three years ago a bill was introduced into the State Parliament by one of the Nationalists, providing for tlie abolition of the use of live birds as targets at matches, but it was pigeonholed. Another of its provisions related to the coursing of hares in enclosures. Now that there has been a stir over the matter the bill will perhaps be resurrected.
