THE PRELIMINARY MATCHES. JAPAN MEETS CUBA^ A. and N'.Z. , MONTREAL. Aug. 19. In the preliminary rounds of .the Davis Cup lawn tenni3 contests in the American zone the match between Japan and Cuba was commenced here to-day. Harada (Japan) defeated Paris (Cuba), 7—5, 6-0, 6-5. ; "' 'y, . Superior ability 'to ' place gave " the Japanese.' the victory. Paris in the first set was forced to cover an immense amount of ground. In the final two >he appeared tired, and was handicapped by slipping on the grass courts, to which he was not accustomed. - Tawara (Japan) defeated Banet (Cuba), g_-7, &—l, 6—2. Tawara took the first set after the Cuban . had thrilled , the spectators by bringing play to the winning point. Banet lost keenness in "the second and third sets. < THE NEXT' GAMES. AMERICAN TEAM CHOSEN. A. and N.Z. SEW YORK.. Aug. 19. The Selection Committee of the United States Lawn Tennis Association to-day reappointed Tilden, Johnston, Richards and Williams members of the Davis Cup team to meet in September either France or the winners of the Cuba-Japan series.
