IMPURE LIME WATER.
A PROPORTION OF CHLORINE. COURT IMPOSES PENALTIES. Charges of selling lime water which did not comply with \ the standard required by law were brought against John Andrew Bock, William John Harvey (Mr. J. F. W. Dickson), and James Paterson (Mr. M. White), in the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. J, W. Poynton, S.M. Mr. V. N. Hubble, for the Health Department, said the standard required the lime water to be made with distilled water. Analysis of samples showed that lime-water sold by defendants contained chlorine. This was due to the fact that distilled water had not been used. The matter was important as lime-water was largely used for infants, and if other than distilled water were used there was a danger of impurities getting into the lime water. The investigations had been begun as a result of complaints by the public, although it was not suggested the lime water sold by defendants was responsible for the complaints. Mr. Dickson said that in Harvey's case there were only three parts of chlorine in 100,000 of lime water. Harvey boiled all water used, although he did not distil it.' Mr. White said the failure to use distilled water made no difference as in preparing food for infants ordinary boiled water was added.
The magistrate said he had not previously heard oi: a prosecution regarding lime-water, and imposed fines of 10s with costs and solicitor's fees, in each case.
