FIRES ON FARMS.
DESTRUCTION OF HAYSTACKS POLICE MAKE AN ARREST. THEFT AND MISCHIEF ALLEGED. [BY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] NEW PLYMOUTH. Friday. There were some sensational happening on farms in Upper Mangorei, near New Plymouth, recently. A farmer found an oaten haystack on his placo had been burned to the ground, and about the same time a settler opposite discovered that part of his separator was missing. On Saturday morning the owner of the burned haystack awoke to find his cow> shed on fire. Ho put it out, but almost immediately afterwards be saw smoke rising from a haystack on an adjacent farm. He gave the alarm and some of the hay was saved. • Detective Meiklejohn arrested Harris L. Spence, who was brought before the Police Court to-day on throe charges of arson, one of theft, and one of mischief. Accused was remanded until Wednesday, bail being refused.
