OBITUARY.
MR. JOHN MEIKLE. [BY TELEGRAPH,—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TE ~ROHA, Wednesday. The death occurred at his residence yesterday morning of Mr. John Meikle, at the age of S3 years. Mr. Meikle was born in Lanarkshire in 1843 and arrived in New Zealand in 1863. For some time he was engaged as a coach driver between Timaru and Christchurch. In May, 1875, he built the Grosvenor Hotel at Timaru. Later, in conjunction with Mr. John Crammond, he purchased a block of land at the head of the Orari River, which is now known as Meikleburn. In 1907 he purchased an estate at Okoroire. He retired in 1911 and took up his residence at Te Aroha, where he resided until the time of his death. In his younger days Mr. Meikle was a great lover of sport and he had owned a number of racehorses. He leaves a widow and two children.
