A DISPUTED GOAL.
CARLAW PARK INCIDENT. The first, goal that was awarded to Auckland in the League football match against Otago on Saturday caused some adverse comment by the spectators. It so happened that Mansill's kick fell short of the cross-bar and both linesmen failed to raise their flags as a token that no goal was scored To everyone's surprise the referee, Mr. Harlock, blew .his whistle and awarded Auckland a goal. It now appears that the referee awarded a penalty goal owing to Otago's forwards attempting to charge the kick. Here, it would 'seem, the referee made a mistake, as the rules provide only for another kick at goal to be taken. It would have been interesting to see what steps a beaten side would have taken had the goal meant the difference between victory and defeat. An appeal against the referee's ruling, lodged in a constitutional manner and based on a question of fact, could have resulted in only one decision—that no goal should have been allowed.
