OBITUARY.

MR. SAMUEL MCLERNON. Napier lost a few days ago by the death oi Mr. Samuel McLernon, one of . the most public-spirited , of its citizens. Tho late Mr. McLernon was born'in 1854, in Belfast, where his" father was a builder.' He was educated at Coleraine and Belfast, and in the latter place became ' a manufacturing jeweller. He came to New Zealand in the ship Dunedin in, 1877. He first- commenced business in Auckland, afterwards removing to Hamilton / and finally to Napier,- though for some years he carried on buiness in both Gisborne and Napier, having the largest jewellery establishment in each place. The deceased was a keen student of the public topics of the day. Ho was for some time a member of the Gisborne Borough Council and a member of. the Licensing Bench. On going to . Napier he became associated with many phases of public life. He was for many years a member of the Napier High Schools Board, a member and past-president" of the Napier Chamber of Commerce, and. also of the Napier Holiday Association. He, disposed of his jewellery business some few years ago and took up sheep-farming on the East Coast. Mr. McLernon is survived by a widow, four, sons and two daughters. One of the daughters is Mrs. H. T. Gillies, of Hamilton.
